O`Brien Outlines US Plans

AIDAN O'BRIEN is daring to defy racing tradition by sending out his smart two-year-old Tomahawk to win both Saturday's Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes and the $1m Breeders' Cup Juvenile on dirt at Arlington just a week later.

The Ballydoyle trainer has declared four colts for the Newmarket race, three of which have also been engaged in the $1 million dirt race in Chicago with Marino Marini and Ontario set to join Tomahawk.

The latter, runner-up to Oasis Dream in the Group 1 Shadwell Stud MiddlePark Stakes on his first run in nearly four months, has secured a place in the Breeders' Cup field alongside stablemates Hold That Tiger and Van Nistelrooy. Marino Marini and Ontario are first and second reserves respectively.

'It is possible they could run in both races,' O'Brien said on Thursday. 'They won't be leaving until Tuesday and they've had a very quiet middle of the season.'

Meanwhile Rock Of Gibraltar is poised for his attempt at US glory, with owner Sir Alex Ferguson and trainer Aidan O'Brien eagerly anticipating the prospect of a dream conclusion to a dream season in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Seven successive Group 1 races is a record to behold - add a Breeders' Cup win and no one will forget.

While O'Brien, typically cautious, refused to rule out an appearance in the Breeders' Cup Classic, Europe's champion miler's official first preference is the Mile, and the Mile is his target.

O'Brien said: 'He is a very straightforward horse and is in good form. He has done nothing but go forward. When we had Giant's Causeway, we didn't think we'd ever have another like him. Now, I don't know where we are going to get another Rock Of Gibraltar.

'With every race he seems to get stronger. He is very versatile, with a lot of speed and tactical pace. A big plus is his 'killer kick.' He can quicken from anywhere.'
